The proposed "Jaime's Law" seeks to amend Florida Statutes section 790.065 to mandate background checks for the sale or transfer of ammunition, aligning it with existing firearm regulations. Licensed importers, manufacturers, or dealers will be required to obtain a completed form from potential buyers, collect a processing fee for criminal history checks, and request a check from the Department of Law Enforcement. Exceptions to these requirements are provided for individuals with valid concealed weapons licenses or law enforcement certifications, as well as certain transfers of ammunition under specific conditions. The bill also introduces provisions that exempt transfers if the transferor has no reason to believe the transferee will misuse the ammunition.

Additionally, the bill requires the Department of Law Enforcement to determine within 24 working hours whether a potential buyer is prohibited from receiving or possessing firearms or ammunition. If a determination cannot be made in that timeframe, a conditional approval number will be issued. Should the buyer later be found prohibited, the conditional approval will be revoked, and local law enforcement will be notified. The bill establishes penalties for providing false information during the purchase process and clarifies that licensed dealers are not liable for damages from compliance with the new regulations. It is set to take effect on October 1, 2026.
