The Florida House of Representatives has introduced a resolution to officially recognize June 10, 2025, as "FSGS Awareness Day" in the state. This initiative highlights the significant prevalence of chronic kidney disease in Florida, where 28 percent of Medicare beneficiaries are affected, the highest rate in the nation. Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), a severe kidney condition characterized by scarring, is a leading cause of kidney failure, with half of those diagnosed requiring dialysis or a transplant within 5 to 10 years. The resolution emphasizes the urgency of raising awareness about FSGS, which can affect individuals of any age but is most commonly diagnosed in men over 45.

The resolution also acknowledges the impact of FSGS on the community, noting that rare kidney diseases like FSGS account for a disproportionate number of kidney failures despite representing a small percentage of chronic kidney disease cases. It references the Tampa Pig Jig, an annual fundraising event that has raised significant funds for FSGS research since its inception in 2011. The designation of "FSGS Awareness Day" aims to support patients and families affected by the disease, promote awareness, and encourage advancements in diagnosis and treatment options.
