This bill amends section 316.1935 of the Florida Statutes to authorize law enforcement agencies to impound motor vehicles driven by individuals who willfully flee or attempt to elude law enforcement officers. A new subsection (7) is added, allowing for the impoundment of such vehicles for a period of 30 business days. The law enforcement agency is required to make diligent efforts to notify the registered owner of the impoundment and must also inform the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. The bill outlines specific conditions under which the impounded vehicle may be released, including scenarios where the vehicle was stolen or in the care of another person at the time of the violation.

Additionally, the bill stipulates that all fees and costs associated with the impoundment must be paid by the vehicle owner or the person leasing or renting the vehicle. The existing subsection (7) is redesignated as subsection (8) and includes a provision stating that any vehicle involved in a violation of this section is considered contraband and may be seized by law enforcement, subject to forfeiture. The bill is set to take effect on July 1, 2025.
