The proposed bill, titled the Smart Living Curriculum Act, mandates the introduction of a Smart Living course for students in grade 8, which will be a requirement for promotion to high school starting in the 2026-2027 school year. Additionally, the bill amends existing statutes to include the Smart Living curriculum as part of the required instruction for students in grades 8 through 12. This curriculum is designed to prepare students for adult life and will cover essential topics such as financial literacy, personal future planning, critical thinking, and practical life skills.
Furthermore, the bill revises the credit requirements for high school graduation, stipulating that students entering grade 9 in the 2026-2027 school year must earn one credit in Smart Living to qualify for a standard high school diploma. It also adjusts the number of elective credits required for graduation, reducing the total from eight to six and a half credits for students entering grade 9 in the same school year. The act is set to take effect on July 1, 2025.
