The bill amends section 383.14 of the Florida Statutes to require that, beginning January 1, 2027, and subject to legislative appropriation, certain newborns must be screened for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This addition is part of the Department of Health's rules regarding newborn screenings, which already mandate that every newborn undergoes testing for various metabolic disorders and hereditary conditions. The amendment specifies that the screening for Duchenne muscular dystrophy will be implemented once funding is secured.

Additionally, the bill maintains the existing requirements for newborn screenings, including the collection of blood specimens before the newborn reaches one week of age and testing for conditions recommended by the Genetics and Newborn Screening Advisory Council. The Department of Health is tasked with expanding the screening program to include newly recommended conditions within 18 months, provided that an appropriate test is available. The effective date for this act is set for July 1, 2025.
