This bill amends section 914.25 of the Florida Statutes to revise the definition of "serious felony offense" to include additional crimes. Specifically, it adds "battery by strangulation, human smuggling, human trafficking, or any other felony that involves the use or threat of physical force or violence against any individual" to the list of offenses that qualify as serious felonies. The bill also reenacts sections 914.27 and 943.031 to ensure that references to the updated definition in relation to victim and witness confidentiality and the Victim and Witness Protection Review Committee are consistent with the new language.
Additionally, the bill maintains the confidentiality of victim and witness information, stipulating that such information is exempt from public disclosure and can only be shared among law enforcement agencies and state attorneys for the purpose of facilitating protective services. It also outlines the process for notifying relevant agencies and businesses about the confidentiality of this information and when it may become public. The act is set to take effect on July 1, 2025.
