The bill amends section 588.17 of the Florida Statutes regarding the disposition of impounded livestock. Specifically, it removes the exception that previously excluded cattle from being offered for adoption or humanely disposed of by the sheriff or county animal control center. This change allows for the adoption or humane disposal of all stray livestock, including cattle, under certain conditions.
Under the new provisions, if livestock is to be offered for adoption or disposed of, the sheriff or animal control center must provide written notice to the known owner, detailing the impound location and fees, and informing them that the livestock will be adopted or disposed of if not redeemed within a specified timeframe of at least three business days. If the owner is unknown, notice must be published on the agency's website, and the same timeframe applies for redemption. The act is set to take effect on July 1, 2025.
