The bill amends section 316.081 of the Florida Statutes to define the term "furthermost left-hand lane" and establishes regulations for operating a motor vehicle in that lane on specified roadways. It prohibits drivers from using the furthermost left-hand lane when they are being overtaken by a faster vehicle, with exceptions for overtaking another vehicle or preparing for a left turn. Additionally, on roads with a speed limit of at least 65 miles per hour, drivers are restricted from using the furthermost left-hand lane when other traffic is present, except under certain conditions such as overtaking, preparing to exit, or when directed by traffic control devices.
The bill also mandates that the Department of Transportation designate the applicable roadways and install signage to inform motorists of these new requirements. The effective date for this act is set for January 1, 2026.
