The bill amends section 316.081 of the Florida Statutes to define the term "furthermost left-hand lane" and establishes regulations for operating motor vehicles in that lane on specified roadways. It prohibits drivers from using the furthermost left-hand lane on roads with two or more lanes allowing movement in the same direction when they are being overtaken by a faster vehicle. Exceptions to this rule include situations where a driver is overtaking another vehicle, preparing for a left turn, or when directed by traffic control devices.
Additionally, the bill specifies that on designated roads with a speed limit of at least 65 miles per hour, drivers may not operate in the furthermost left-hand lane when other traffic is present, except under certain conditions such as overtaking, preparing to exit, or when environmental conditions dictate. The Department of Transportation is tasked with designating the applicable roadways and installing signage to inform motorists of these requirements. The act is set to take effect on January 1, 2026.
