This bill aims to enhance student mental health support in Florida schools by amending section 1006.041 of the Florida Statutes. It mandates that each school district implement a school-based mental health assistance program that includes training for teachers and staff to identify and respond to mental health issues. A key component of the program is the direct employment of school-based mental health service providers, which is intended to
increase the ratio of
staff to students, aligning with nationally recommended models.
Additionally, the bill establishes specific ratios for mental health professionals in high school settings, requiring that by the beginning of the 2027 school year, there be at least 1 school psychologist for every 700 full-time students and 1 certified school counselor, school social worker, or other licensed mental health professional for every 250 full-time students in grades 9 through 12. The bill also emphasizes the need for strategies to maximize the time these professionals spend providing direct services to students. The act is set to take effect on July 1, 2025.
