This bill mandates the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to conduct a survey among Florida's youth to assess whether a new bird species should be designated as the official state bird, replacing the northern mockingbird. The survey will be administered to participants in the Florida Youth Conservation Centers Network summer camps during the summers of 2025 and 2026. It will include options such as the northern mockingbird, American osprey, Florida scrub jay, American flamingo, and American white ibis. Additionally, the commission is required to provide relevant information about these birds on its publicly available website.

The commission must submit the results of the survey to the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives by December 31, 2026. This initiative reflects a desire to engage the next generation in the decision-making process regarding the state's official bird, following a previous vote by schoolchildren in 2008 that favored the American osprey. The bill is set to take effect upon becoming law.
