This bill amends existing Florida law regarding cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training in schools and introduces a new requirement for public schools to develop a cardiac emergency response plan (CERP). Specifically, it revises the current requirement for CPR instruction to ensure that all students in grades 9 and 11 receive training based on a nationally recognized program. The bill removes the previous stipulation that CPR instruction only occurs when a school district has the necessary equipment, thereby mandating that training includes the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

Additionally, the bill establishes a new section, 1003.457, which requires each public school to create a CERP that outlines the response to cardiac emergencies on school grounds. Schools must collaborate with local emergency service providers to ensure that their CERP aligns with community emergency protocols and incorporates evidence-based guidelines from recognized organizations like the American Heart Association. The CERP will also dictate the placement of AEDs and the training of appropriate school staff in first aid, CPR, and AED use, ensuring that the training follows established evidence-based standards. The act is set to take effect on July 1, 2025.
