The bill amends existing Florida law regarding cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training in schools and introduces a new requirement for public schools to develop a cardiac emergency response plan (CERP). Specifically, it revises the training requirements for students in grades 6, 8, 9, and 11, ensuring that instruction in CPR and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) is based on a nationally recognized program. The previous stipulation that instruction must only occur when a school district has the necessary equipment has been removed.

Additionally, the bill mandates that each public school create a CERP that outlines the response to cardiac emergencies on school grounds, including collaboration with local emergency service providers to integrate the plan into community protocols. The CERP must include evidence-based core elements and ensure proper placement of AEDs according to American Heart Association guidelines. Furthermore, designated school staff must receive training in first aid, CPR, and AED use, as determined by the CERP. The act is set to take effect on July 1, 2025.
