This bill provides for the relief of Eric Miles, Jr., and Jennifer Miles, who are the copersonal representatives of their deceased minor son, E.E.M., due to the negligence of the South Broward Hospital District, operating as Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital. The bill acknowledges the severe medical complications E.E.M. faced after being inadequately evaluated and treated by the hospital staff, which ultimately led to his death at the age of seven. The Miles family filed a lawsuit against the hospital district, resulting in a settlement agreement of $500,000, of which $300,000 has already been paid. The bill authorizes an additional appropriation of $200,000 to be paid to the Miles family as compensation for the injuries and damages sustained by E.E.M.

The bill includes several key insertions into current law. It states that the facts presented in the preamble are declared true, authorizes the South Broward Hospital District to appropriate $200,000 for the Miles family, and specifies that the total compensation from the hospital district and the amount awarded under this act will serve as the sole compensation for all claims related to the incident. Additionally, it limits the total amount paid for attorney fees to a maximum of 25 percent of the total amount awarded under this act. The bill is set to take effect upon becoming law.
