2 A resolution honoring the 200th anniversary of the
3 proclamation of the Adams-Onís Treaty ceding Florida
4 to the United States and designating February 22,
5 2021, as "Florida Treaty Day."

7 WHEREAS, on February 22, 1819, during the reign of King
8 Ferdinand VII, the Secretary of State of the United States, John
9 Quincy Adams, under President James Monroe, and the Minister for
10 Spain, Luis de Onís y González-Vara, signed a treaty that ceded
11 Florida to the United States, which was immediately ratified by
12 the United States Senate but delayed by the government of Spain,
13 and
14 WHEREAS, the Adams-Onís Treaty of 1819, also known as the
15 Transcontinental Treaty or the Florida Treaty, settled border
16 disputes between the United States and the Spanish Empire
17 throughout North America, and
18 WHEREAS, the Adams-Onís Treaty was ratified by Spain on
19 October 24, 1820, and a second time by the United States Senate
20 on February 19, 1821, before being finally proclaimed on
21 February 22, 1821, and
22 WHEREAS, on July 17, 1821, in Pensacola, United States
23 Commissioner and Governor of East and West Florida, Andrew
24 Jackson, received Florida from Spanish authorities on behalf of
25 the American government fulfilling the treaty, NOW, THEREFORE,

27 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
28 Florida:

30 That February 22, 2021, be known as "Florida Treaty Day" in
31 the State of Florida in honor of the 200th anniversary of the
32 proclamation of the Adams-Onís Treaty ceding Florida to the
33 United States.
