Mayor Muriel Bowser has nominated Pratima Narayan to fill a vacancy on the Commission on Human Rights, a position left open by Maria Burnett. Narayan is set to serve the remainder of the unexpired term ending December 31, 2026, as well as a subsequent term concluding on December 31, 2029. The nomination aligns with the Confirmation Act of 1978 and the Human Rights Act of 1977, and the Mayor has requested the Council to consider this nomination promptly. The resolution confirming her appointment will take effect immediately upon adoption and will be communicated to both Narayan and the Mayor.
Pratima Narayan brings a wealth of experience in law, human rights, and corporate accountability, with 18 years of professional background in various significant roles. Notably, she served as a Senior Advisor in the Biden-Harris Administration, focusing on U.S. policy regarding atrocity prevention, and has held positions such as Advocacy Director at Open Society Foundations and Chief of Investigations for the United Nations Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan. Narayan, a resident of Ward 6, holds a Bachelor of Science from Cornell University and a Juris Doctor from Boston University, further enhancing her qualifications for the Commission. The Office of the General Counsel has confirmed the legal sufficiency of the resolution.
