The Council of the District of Columbia has passed a ceremonial resolution to honor the life, service, and legacy of Terry Lamont Bennett, a dedicated community member and public servant. Raised in Southeast Washington, D.C., Bennett excelled academically and athletically, graduating as valedictorian from Ballou High School and earning a full-tuition Posse Scholarship to Bucknell University. He was a natural leader, serving as president of the Black Student Union and gaining recognition as a talented DJ. After graduating in 2015, he returned to his community to work as a behavior technician at Ballou High School and later joined the Metropolitan Police Department, where he served with distinction and was named Officer of the Month in 2024.
Bennett was deeply committed to youth mentorship and athletics, coaching football at Ballou High School for nine years and participating in competitive flag football. He balanced his roles as a police officer, coach, and family man with pride and dedication, often expressing his belief that one's beginnings do not define their potential. The resolution declares July 21, 2026, as Terry Bennett Day in the District of Columbia, celebrating his enduring impact on the community and the lives he touched throughout his life.
