The Council of the District of Columbia has passed a ceremonial resolution to honor the life and legacy of Joan A.T. Kelley, who dedicated over four decades to education in the District. Born on November 8, 1938, Kelley was a product of D.C. Public Schools and went on to earn degrees from D.C. Teachers College and Georgetown University. She began her teaching career in 1961 and served as Principal of John Tyler Elementary School for 17 years, positively impacting countless students and educators. Even after her retirement in 2004, Kelley remained active in the educational community and was involved in various professional organizations.
In addition to her educational contributions, Kelley was a devoted member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for nearly 50 years and played a significant role in her church through various ministries. She was also a loving mother and cherished her family, which included her daughters and grandchildren. The resolution recognizes her warmth, generosity, and the joy she brought to her community, ensuring that her legacy of service, leadership, and commitment to education will be remembered.
