The Food Policy Council Procurement Amendment Act of 2025 aims to enhance the Food Policy Council's role in evaluating food procurement practices across the District government. This legislation proposes to change the reporting timeline for the Council from an annual to a triennial basis, aligning it with practices observed in most state and local governments. The Council will now be required to provide a comprehensive report on the local food system every three years, which will include assessments of food access, identification of low food access areas, and recommendations for policy revisions.
Additionally, the bill expands the Council's authority to oversee improvements in the quality of institutional food purchased with District funds, ensuring that food procured for schools, jails, and shelters is more nutritious and sustainable. New provisions will require the Director to advise food-procuring agencies on best practices for nutrition and sustainability, collaborate with the Office of Contracting and Procurement, and consolidate food purchasing data to track performance against procurement goals. These changes are intended to support the local economy while meeting environmental and health standards.
