The resolution recognizes the 80th Anniversary of the founding of Alpha Chi Pi Omega Sorority and Fraternity, Inc., established by Dr. Marjorie Stewart Joyner. This historically Black organization, which serves beauticians and barbers, was founded on October 27, 1945, in Washington, D.C. Dr. Joyner, a prominent cosmetologist and civil rights leader, played a significant role in the beauty industry and was associated with Madame C.J. Walker. She contributed to the development of state laws governing cosmetology in Illinois and provided support to Black servicemen during World War II, advocating for civil rights and opportunities for women of color.
The resolution highlights Dr. Joyner's legacy and the impact of Alpha Chi Pi Omega in empowering Black individuals economically and socially. The organization will celebrate its anniversary with an 80th Ruby Anniversary Jubilee Celebration, including a reenactment of the founding meeting, from October 24-29, 2025, in Washington, D.C. The Council of the District of Columbia expresses its recognition and celebration of both the sorority and fraternity and Dr. Joyner's enduring contributions to the community.
