The Townhomes on Capitol Hill, a mixed-income cooperative community located in Ward 6, is being recognized by the Council of the District of Columbia for its 25th anniversary. Established on the site of the former Ellen Wilson Dwellings, which fell into disrepair and were closed in 1988, the Townhomes were developed through a collaborative effort involving local residents and the District of Columbia Housing Authority. With the support of a $25 million HOPE VI grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the community was designed to provide safer, higher-quality homes and was completed in 1998. The Townhomes have since become a vibrant community, with many original residents still living there and contributing to its legacy.

The anniversary celebration included a legacy brunch and a community day filled with activities, highlighting the strong sense of community and commitment among residents. The Townhomes on Capitol Hill not only serve as a place to live but also foster a sense of belonging, as evidenced by families who have remained in the community for generations. The Council's resolution honors the dedication and efforts of those who have contributed to the success of the Townhomes, recognizing it as a thriving example of cooperative living and community resilience.
