The Parkside Canopy Emergency Amendment Act of 2025 seeks to amend the Urban Forest Preservation Amendment Act of 2002 by exempting specific Heritage Trees located in Lots 865, 866, 867, 868, and 869 in Square 5056 from the Heritage Tree removal requirements. This exemption applies to trees for which the Zoning Commission has approved a planned unit development prior to July 1, 2016. The bill introduces a new subsection (e) to Section 104a of the Urban Forest Preservation Act, clarifying that the removal requirements do not apply to these designated Heritage Trees.
The act is intended to be enacted on an emergency basis and will take effect following approval by the Mayor, or if vetoed, upon the Council's override of that veto. It is designed to remain in effect for no longer than 90 days, in accordance with the emergency act provisions outlined in the District of Columbia Home Rule Act. The bill also includes a fiscal impact statement adopted from the Budget Director, ensuring that the financial implications of the amendment are acknowledged.
