The "Let Students Attend Kindergarten Temporary Amendment Act of 2025" aims to amend compulsory school enrollment requirements in the District of Columbia for the school years 2025-2026 and 2026-2027. The bill stipulates that minors who were living in another state and did not meet that state's age requirement for kindergarten enrollment, as well as those who are younger than six and enrolled in a five-day-per-week pre-kindergarten program, will be exempt from certain enrollment requirements. Additionally, it allows students who have not attended kindergarten and have not reached the age of six by May 31 to enroll in kindergarten at the request of their parents or guardians.
The bill also includes provisions to ensure that students who relied on prior communications from DC Public Schools regarding feeder pattern advancement are not disadvantaged. Specifically, it allows students completing their terminal year at a feeder school to advance to the next middle or high school in the feeder pattern, regardless of boundary changes, and provides options for students at Hardy Middle School regarding their high school choice based on sibling attendance. The act will take effect following mayoral approval and a congressional review period, and it will expire after 225 days.
