The Council of the District of Columbia has passed a ceremonial resolution to honor Heidi Ellis during the 2025 DC Black Pride celebration. Heidi Ellis is recognized for her significant contributions as a policy strategist and advocate for equity, particularly at the intersection of race, gender, and sexuality. She has held notable positions, including serving in the Obama Administration at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and participating in both the White House LGBTQ+ and African American kitchen cabinets. Currently, she leads HME Consulting and Advocacy, focusing on inclusive policies and stakeholder engagement for marginalized communities, and is actively involved in the DC LGBTQ+ Budget Coalition and various nonprofit boards.
DC Black Pride, celebrated annually, aims to raise awareness and showcase the diversity of the LGBTQIA+ African American community while supporting organizations addressing health disparities and education. This year marks the 34th annual celebration, themed "BLACK PRIDE IS FREEDOM," and it is recognized as the oldest and one of the largest Black Pride events globally, attracting over 500,000 attendees from various countries. The resolution acknowledges the importance of DC Black Pride in fostering community, raising awareness for HIV/AIDS prevention, and combating homophobia, while celebrating the contributions of individuals like Heidi Ellis.
