The Council of the District of Columbia has passed a resolution recognizing June as Men's Health Month and the week of June 9-15, 2025, as Men's Health Week. This initiative aims to raise public awareness about men's health issues, emphasizing the importance of regular disease prevention screenings and healthier lifestyles. Men's Health Month, which began in 1994, is part of a broader international effort to educate men, boys, and their families about health and wellness. The resolution highlights the role of the Men's Health Network in promoting these efforts and acknowledges the participation of numerous organizations in advocating for men's health.
The resolution also addresses concerning statistics regarding men's health, noting that men have a lower life expectancy than women and face higher rates of various health issues, including diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated these challenges, leading to a significant decline in men's life expectancy. Additionally, the resolution calls attention to the rising rates of suicide and substance abuse among men, underscoring the need for increased awareness and support for mental health. To promote these goals, Wear Blue Day will be observed on June 13, 2025, as part of the awareness campaign.
