Mayor Muriel Bowser has requested the Council of the District of Columbia to approve the reprogramming of $2,500,000 in FY 2025 Capital Funds from the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) to the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR). This funding is intended for the construction of a geothermal well system at the Harry Thomas Recreation Center, which will also benefit the adjacent Langley Elementary School. The funds will be transferred from the DCPS Major Repair and Maintenance project to the DPR capital budget, as the geothermal system will be located on DPR property.
The Office of the Chief Financial Officer has reviewed the request and confirmed that this reprogramming will not negatively impact the budgets of either agency or the District's overall financial plan. The geothermal well system is designed to improve energy efficiency and support the District's sustainability initiatives. The resolution highlights the need for prompt action to ensure the timely construction of the geothermal system, which is crucial for enhancing energy efficiency at both the recreation center and the school.
