The resolution honors Ms. Anita Bellamy Shelton on her 90th birthday, recognizing her over 50 years of dedicated service to the Washington, DC community as an advocate for marginalized groups, including those living in poverty and victims of discrimination. Born in Harlem and educated in segregated schools, Ms. Shelton became a first-generation college graduate from Howard University, earning degrees in Social Work. She was appointed by Mayor Marion Barry as the Director of the DC Office of Human Rights, where she significantly strengthened the District's human rights laws. Additionally, she has held various leadership roles, including Executive Director of the National Committee on Household Employment, where she advocated for domestic workers' rights and improved wages.

The resolution also highlights Ms. Shelton's contributions to community organizing, including her involvement in one of the city's first rent strikes and her leadership roles in organizations such as the Christ Child Settlement House and the National Urban League. Currently, she serves as the elected Ward One Committeewoman and President of DC Women in Politics, supporting women in their political endeavors. The Council commends her lifelong commitment to social justice and public service, acknowledging the positive impact of her work on countless lives and the advancement of a more equitable society.
