Mayor Muriel Bowser has submitted a nomination for Ms. Tomeka Watson-Lewis to serve on the Students in the Care of D.C. Coordinating Committee, as mandated by the Confirmation Act of 1978 and the Students in the Care of D.C. Coordinating Committee Act of 2018. Ms. Watson-Lewis, a current or former student involved in the foster care system, is being proposed to fill a vacant seat on the committee for a term ending November 15, 2028. The resolution for her appointment has been presented to the Council of the District of Columbia for confirmation, along with her biographical information highlighting her extensive experience in nonprofit leadership and commitment to addressing issues related to gun violence and at-risk youth.

Ms. Watson-Lewis currently serves as the Executive Director and CEO of Mute the Violence DC, where she focuses on empowering youth and preventing gun violence. Her personal experience as a former ward of the state has fueled her passion for supporting and uplifting others in similar situations. She holds an Associate of Arts in Criminal Justice and is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in the same field. The resolution has been reviewed for legal sufficiency and is set to take effect immediately upon adoption by the Council.
