David Coleman
Mr. David Coleman is a Senior Policy Analyst of Racial Justice at the
National Education Association and a current member of the Racial
Equity Advisory Board. Mr. Coleman has almost a decade of experience
advising both government agencies and private corporations on policy
matters. As an attorney, he has helped shape policies around employee
and labor relations; hiring practices; corporate bylaws; and health
insurance. As a government leader, he has created, revised, and
implemented policies on curriculum; employee evaluation; agency
investigations; graduation; attendance; and other various needs.
Mr. Coleman’s passion for equity, diversity, and inclusion has been the
driving force in his career. At the National Education Association, his areas of focus include
LGBTQIA+ rights; the school to prison pipeline; restorative practices; and leadership development
programs at both state and local education institutions. Prior to the National Education Association,
Mr. Coleman worked in District Columbia Public Schools as a Director of Organizational Equity
and Specialist in Compliance and Policy. At DCPS, Mr. Coleman developed initiatives, designed
initiatives, and implemented trainings and programs that included value-based strategies. He also
recruited, interviewed, and oversaw the leadership of teams focused on strategic operations;
quality assurance for DCPS’ risk management; stakeholder grievances; civil rights actions;
employee investigations; and policy development. Prior to DCPS, Mr. Coleman also worked as
Chief of Staff for District 2 of Miami-Dade County Public Schools and an Associate Attorney at
a leading defense firm in Florida.
A Ward 8 resident, Mr. Coleman earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Divinity from
Howard University, his Master of Business Administration from Florida International University,
and his Juris Doctor from the University of Miami.
