                                        October 1 , 2024

To recognize, honor, and celebrate Bowers Fancy Dairy Products, on the occasion of its 60th

       anniversary, for its continued presence as a beloved vendor within the historic Eastern

       Market and its dedication to and involvement in the community.

       WHEREAS, Bowers Fancy Dairy Products (“Bowers Cheese”), located in the south hall

of Eastern Market, opened in 1964;

       WHEREAS, Bowers Cheese was founded after Harris Rockford Bowers purchased Stand

400 from the estate of William Sweeney at its present location;

        WHEREAS, Bowers Cheese has since passed through three generations of the Bowers

family, from Harris Rockford Bowers to Ray Bowers to current owner Mike Bowers, with Mike’s

son Ryan spending time working with the cheese wheels, as well;

        WHEREAS, under the ownership of Mike Bowers, the shop continues to remain a favorite

over 6 decades not by resting on his laurels, but by staying highly informed on changes and trends

to customer preferences and interests, including through its membership in the American Cheese

Society;

        WHEREAS, Bowers Cheese is one of the most active shops within Eastern Market’s South

Hall, engaging with the Eastern Market Community Advisory Committee, Eastern Market Tenants

Association, Eastern Market Main Streets, and the Capitol Hill Association of Merchants and

Professionals to address market issues, regularly participating in market promotional

opportunities, and as an ambassador to the surrounding community;

        WHEREAS, Bowers Cheese regularly supports numerous Capitol Hill and community-

based organizations to the betterment of the city, including the Capitol Hill Foundation, Miriam’s

Kitchen, the National Network to End Domestic Violence, the Little Sisters of the Poor, and St.

Peter’s Catholic School and Church; and

       WHEREAS, Bowers Cheese remains a beloved institution within Eastern Market.

        RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this

resolution may be cited as the “Bowers Cheese 60th Anniversary Recognition Resolution of 2024”.

       Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes, honors, and celebrates Bowers

Fancy Dairy Products, on the occasion of its 60th anniversary, for its continued presence as a

beloved vendor within the historic Eastern Market and its dedication to and involvement in the

community.

       Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
