IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
September 17, 2024
To posthumously recognize and honor James Herman “Butch” McAdams for his exceptional
resilience and tireless dedication to education, athletics, sports media, and community
empowerment in the District of Columbia.
WHEREAS, James Herman “Butch” McAdams is a native Washingtonian who grew up at
the corner of 14th and T Streets NW, in the midst of the historical U and 14th Street corridors;
WHEREAS, he was married to Andrea Rich McAdams for 31 years;
WHEREAS, James Herman “Butch” McAdams was raised in the Catholic faith and
educated at St. Augustine's and Mackin High Schools in NW Washington, DC;
WHEREAS, The lifelong D.C. resident would go on to play basketball at Mackin High
School before graduating;
WHEREAS, James Herman “Butch” McAdams majored in physical education at the
University of the District of Columbia;
WHEREAS, James Herman “Butch” McAdams taught and coached varsity basketball at
D.C.'s Maret School;
WHEREAS, On Friday, June 5, 2009, Maret High School hosted a retirement party for
Coach McAdams. He retired after 31 years as a teacher of Physical Education and the school's
Head Varsity Basketball Coach;
WHEREAS, On June 10, 2017, James Herman “Butch” McAdams was enshrined as part
of the District of Columbia State Athletic Association (DCSAA) Hall of Fame;
WHEREAS, James Herman “Butch” McAdams taught his students that the most
important game being played in the world today is 'The Game Called Life’;
WHEREAS, James Herman “Butch” McAdams began broadcasting in 1992 when he
became a one-of-a-kind radio sports talk show personality at WOL Radio;

WHEREAS, James Herman “Butch” McAdams has hosted the 'In and Out of Sports,' a
sports talk show on WOL Radio, since 2010;
WHEREAS, James Herman “Butch” McAdams shared his knowledge of D.C.'s rich
basketball history on his radio show on 1450 WOL;
WHEREAS, His teams were ranked in the top 20 for multiple years, and several of his
players would go on to play Division one college basketball;
IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF
COLUMBIA, That this resolution may be cited as the “James Herman “Butch” McAdams
Posthumous Recognition Resolution of 2024”.
Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes and honors the life and legacy
of James Herman “Butch” McAdams as a native Washingtonian, pioneer, educator, coach,
mentor, and advocate for the District of Columbia.
Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
