A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION

IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
February 6, 2024
To recognize, honor, and celebrate the 20th Anniversary of DC9 Nightclub situated in the
District’s historic U Street Corridor and to recognize Bill Spieler, Amber Bursik, Kyle
Remissong, and the late entrepreneur Joe Englert for their heartfelt commitment to
providing a vibrant music hub for up-and-coming artists, and for contributions to the
flourishing art community in the District.
WHEREAS, Bill Spieler, an experienced manager with a notable career in the nightlife
scene since 1989, partnered with a former colleague in 2004 to co-found the celebrated indie
music venue, DC9 Nightclub;
WHEREAS, aptly named in homage to its location on 9th Street NW along the U Street
Corridor in Ward 1, DC9 Nightclub has contributed to the rich record of live performances in the
historic area, establishing itself as a distinctive space for both community engagement and
musical expression;
WHEREAS, for 2 decades, DC9 Nightclub has served as a platform for emerging artists,
highlighting an array of local and international talent, including The XX, Phantogram, Brian
Jonestown Massacre, Future Islands, Priests, Wet Leg, Mac DeMarco, Sylvan Esso, Big Freedia,
Walk The Moon, Courtney Barnett, The 1975, Mitski, The Drums, and Saint Motel;
WHEREAS, DC9 Nightclub has been a gathering place for indie music enthusiasts
and fostering a dynamic music scene;
WHEREAS, the owners of DC9 Nightclub have demonstrated an unwavering
commitment to growing the District’s music scene, curating an eclectic and inclusive lineup of
artists; and
WHEREAS, the Council looks forward to the ongoing cultivation of the District’s
creative and cultural spaces, ensuring that longtime and new residents can enjoy the District’s
rich musical heritage.

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
resolution may be cited as the “DC9 Nightclub 20th Anniversary Ceremonial Recognition
Resolution of 2024”.
Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes and celebrates 20 years of
DC9 Nightclub’s enduring dedication to providing an intimate experience for concertgoers and
strengthening the District’s exceptional and diverse music community.
Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
