A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION

IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
September 19, 2023
To recognize and honor the sixtieth anniversary of the historic March on Washington on August
26th, 2023 at the Lincoln Memorial.
WHEREAS, The March on Washington celebrates its sixtieth anniversary of the historic
civil rights march took place at the Lincoln Memorial on August 28th, 1963;
WHEREAS, The March on Washington brought together a coalition of student, civil rights,
labor, faith, and advocate groups;
WHEREAS, The March on Washington advocated for the advancement of economic and
civil rights for African Americans across the country;
WHEREAS, The March on Washington advocated for jobs, economic security, civil rights,
an end to Jim Crow Laws, and voting rights;
WHEREAS, the March attracted over 200,000 people and represented the culmination of
years of nonviolent demonstrations throughout the south;
WHEREAS, The March on Washington helped lead to the passage of the Civil Rights Act
and the Voting Rights Act;
WHEREAS, The March on Washington was the event where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
gave his “I Have a Dream Speech”;
WHEREAS, The March on Washington hosted a celebration of the sixtieth anniversary of
the March on Washington on August 26th, 2023;
WHEREAS, The March on Washington’s sixtieth anniversary advocated to protect the
right to vote;

WHEREAS, The March on Washington’s legacy continues today in advocacy to protect
the right to vote, advancement of civil rights, and the advancement of the economic well being of
Black people in the United States;
WHEREAS, recent events show that the fight for civil rights and equality continues,
including the recent Supreme Court decision striking down affirmative action.
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
resolution may be cited as the “March on Washington Sixtieth Anniversary Recognition
Resolution of 2023.”
Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes and honors the March on
Washington on it’s sixtieth anniversary.
Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
