The Connecticut General Assembly has introduced House Joint Resolution No. 34 to commemorate the twenty-seventh anniversary of the sister-state relationship between Connecticut and Taiwan. This resolution highlights the long-standing friendship and fruitful exchanges in cultural, educational, and economic sectors that have developed since 1999. It emphasizes the significance of Taiwan as a vital trading partner, noting that Connecticut exported $294 million worth of products to Taiwan in 2024, and recognizes Taiwan's role as a full-fledged democracy and free-market economy that shares core values with the United States.
The resolution also underscores the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait for maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region, and it supports Taiwan's participation in international organizations. It advocates for enhanced educational exchanges, including the potential for a driver's license reciprocity agreement, and highlights the economic ties between the U.S. and Taiwan, which amounted to $136.3 billion in bilateral trade in 2024. The resolution calls for a closer partnership in various sectors and directs that a copy be sent to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York.
