The General Assembly Raised Bill No. 1494 mandates that all water companies conduct monthly testing for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in their public water supply systems. Specifically, if the average PFAS level exceeds twenty parts per trillion over a three-month period, the water company must implement measures to reduce the PFAS levels to twenty parts per trillion or lower. These measures may include linking to a different water supply system with lower PFAS levels, installing a PFAS filtering system, or blending well waters with varying PFAS concentrations.
Additionally, the bill empowers the Commissioner of Public Health, in collaboration with the Commissioner of Energy and Environmental Protection, to adopt regulations to enforce these requirements. These regulations may outline further actions that water companies can take to ensure compliance with the PFAS level threshold. The bill is effective upon passage and introduces new legal language to the existing statutes without deleting any current provisions.
