The proposed Bill No. 6229 aims to significantly reduce the use of single-use plastics and polystyrene waste in the state. It introduces new legal provisions that prohibit state and municipal government agencies, as well as vendors with government contracts, schools, and businesses, from selling or providing any food ware or beverage products made from polystyrene, including takeout containers and trays, as well as any packaging products made from polystyrene, such as packaging peanuts. Additionally, the bill bans the use of single-use plastic cutlery, straws, plastic stirrers, and food ware accessories, with the exception that single-use plastic straws may still be provided to individuals with disabilities.
Furthermore, the bill mandates that state and municipal buildings, along with schools that are required to have drinking fountains, must also include an equivalent number of bottle-filling stations. It also calls for a report to be prepared on the establishment of a requirement to reduce single-use plastic packaging and food service products by at least twenty-five percent by the year 2032. Overall, the bill seeks to address environmental concerns related to plastic waste and promote more sustainable practices within the state.
