The Government Administration and Elections Committee
REASONS FOR BILL:
This bill seeks to add four members to the Commission for Educational Technology effective
July 1, 2021. The Connecticut Commission for Educational Technology is responsible for
coordinating the integration of technology into Connecticuts schools, libraries and higher
education institutions.
RESPONSE FROM ADMINISTRATION/AGENCY:
Doug Casey, Executive Director, Connecticut Commission for Educational Technology
(CET): Mr. Casey identified the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic as the primary reason for this
bill. Since so many students are learning remotely to avoid transmission of the virus, the
Connecticut Commission for Educational Technology believes that it is imperative to include
members on the commissions board who represent schools and the important role that
teachers serve during these challenging times. Four members that CET seeks to restore to
the board include individuals who represent superintendents, the Connecticut Educators
Computer Association, elementary school teachers and secondary school teachers. CET
believes that the restoration of these members will help the commission be better prepared to
meet the needs of educational technology today. Additionally, CET believes that these
members will be instrumental in ensuring that schools have adequate access to pandemic-
related technology.
