The City Council of Chicago has passed an ordinance amending Section 9-64-170 of the Municipal Code of Chicago, which pertains to parking restrictions for commercial pickup trucks and vans weighing less than 8,000 pounds. The amendment allows for the establishment of specific areas where owners of such commercial vehicles, who also reside within the designated area and obtain a special parking permit, may park their vehicles. This exemption does not apply to junk vehicles and requires a residential parking permit if a residential parking zone restriction is in effect on any street within the designated area.
The ordinance also specifies the process for authorizing these parking areas, which includes identifying the area in the ordinance, covering no less than two contiguous city blocks, and potentially placing a cap on the number of special parking permits issued. Permits are to be issued by the applicable alderman on a first-come, non-discriminatory basis. An insertion was made to the ordinance, adding a new designated area, "35.1 South side of Elston Avenue between Christiana Avenue and Kedzie Avenue," where permitted parking is authorized. The ordinance is effective upon passage and publication.
