ACR 218, as introduced, Ramos. The Huuc Atam Highway.
This measure would designate a specified portion of State Route 18 in the County of San Bernardino as the Huuc Atam Highway. The measure would request that the Department of Transportation determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs.

WHEREAS, Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation, also known as the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, is a federally recognized sovereign Indian tribe located on the San Manuel Indian Reservation in the County of San Bernardino near Highland, California; and
WHEREAS, Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation proudly reclaims its ancestral name, Yuhaaviatam, pronounced as “yu-HAH-vee-ah-tahm,” honoring the deep-rooted heritage and enduring legacy of its people; and
WHEREAS, Exercising its inherent sovereign right to self-governance, the Yuhaaviatam is committed to providing essential services to its citizens by building infrastructure, maintaining civil services, and promoting social, economic, and cultural development; and
WHEREAS, As the Indigenous people of the San Bernardino highlands, passes, valleys, mountains and high deserts, Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation has called this region home since time immemorial and are committed to remaining a productive partner in the San Bernardino region; and
WHEREAS, The Yuhaaviatam is one of the clans of the Maara’yam, pronounced as “MAH-ra-yahm,” the larger group of people from whom the tribe’s citizens descend and who is broadly referred to also as Serrano people; and
WHEREAS, The Huuc Atam is the Maara’yam traditional name for the Arrowhead landmark that is the namesake of Arrowhead Springs; and
WHEREAS, “Huuc Atam” translates to arrowhead, which literally means “tooth of the arrow”; and
WHEREAS, The Arrowhead is a natural landmark that measures 1,375 feet long and 449 feet wide and can be seen from miles around; and
WHEREAS, The Arrowhead is sacred to Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation and plays an important part in the Maara’yam culture; and
WHEREAS, The Maara’yam tradition holds that the Arrowhead was placed there by the Creator; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the portion of State Route 18 in the County of San Bernardino from the junction with State Route 210, at postmile T6.179, to the Old Waterman Canyon Road, at postmile 9.150, as the Huuc Atam Highway; and be it further
Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to determine the cost of appropriate signs, consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system, showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author for appropriate distribution.
