HR 79 (Valencia) – As Introduced January 27, 2026
SUBJECT: Unclaimed Property Month.
SUMMARY: Recognizes the month of February 2026 as Unclaimed Property Month
throughout the State of California; and, encourages Californians to utilize the Controller’s free
service to claim their property and share this information with others. Specifically, this
resolution makes the following legislative findings:
1) The State of California has more than $15.485 billion in unclaimed property, including
uncashed checks, insurance proceeds, and other financial assets that are considered lost or
abandoned when an owner cannot be located after a specified period of time.
2) For over five decades, the Controller has received hundreds of millions of dollars annually
from entities unable to locate the owners, and has made a commitment to returning these
financial assets to their rightful owners.
3) Currently, the Controller holds more than 93.6 million properties for a California population
of over 39 million residents.
4) Last year, the Controller, through the Unclaimed Property Program, returned more than $534
million to rightful owners.
5) To find out if there is unclaimed property listed under their name, Californians can visit the
Controller’s Unclaimed Property internet website at www.claimit.ca.gov.
