Relative to Taiwan.

SR 63, as introduced, McNerney.

WHEREAS, The year 2025 marks the 41st anniversary of the California-Taiwan sister-state relationship. Since this bond was established in 1984, Taiwan has enjoyed extensive and friendly relations with the State of California and the United States; and
WHEREAS, The California State Senate delegation visited Taiwan in April 2025, where they observed Taiwan’s current developments in democracy, economy, and culture; and
WHEREAS, During their visit to Taiwan, the Senate delegation gained a deeper understanding of Taiwan’s position as California’s third-largest trading partner, as bilateral trade reached $50 billion in 2024, and the 14th largest market for California agricultural exports. Taiwan consumed $280,000,000 worth of California agricultural products in 2024. Taiwan-affiliated companies and exports of United States goods and services support well-paid American jobs, and semiconductor technology, artificial intelligence, green energy, education, and tourism offer further opportunities for collaboration; and
WHEREAS, Taiwan has the ability and willingness to contribute to international society, and strives towards meaningful participation in important international organizations, such as the United Nations, the World Health Organization, the International Civil Aviation Organization, the International Criminal Police Organization, and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change; and
WHEREAS, In 1999, President Bill Clinton declared the first week of May to be “Taiwanese American Heritage Week.” This year also marks the 26th anniversary of said week. It has significantly promoted a shared community amongst various generations of Taiwanese Americans in California. Additionally, it has tangibly strengthened the bilateral relationship between California and Taiwan; now therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, That the Senate joins Taiwan in celebration of the 41st anniversary of the California-Taiwan sister-state relationship and the 26th anniversary of Taiwanese American Heritage Week. It is committed to growing the warm relations and bilateral exchanges between California and Taiwan; and be it further
Resolved, That the Senate acknowledges that Taiwanese communities have made significant and indelible contributions to California’s economic growth and development over the years; and be it further
Resolved, That the Senate recognizes the willingness of the Taiwanese people to participate in international organizations and supports Taiwan’s contributions to the international community across appropriate avenues; and be it further
Resolved, That the Senate commends the Taiwanese government for its efforts to strengthen investment in the United States and looks forward to seeing more Taiwanese companies establish operations in California; and be it further
Resolved, That the Senate reiterates that Taiwan’s vibrant democracy is vital to the security and stability of the Asia-Pacific region; and be it further
Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
