Bill No: SR 62
Author: Valladares (R), et al.
Introduced: 8/19/25
Vote: Majority
SUBJECT: Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.
SOURCE: Author
DIGEST: This resolution proclaims November 2025 as Pancreatic Cancer
Awareness Month in California and urges all Californians to wage hope to end
pancreatic cancer.
ANALYSIS: This resolution makes the following legislative findings:
1) In 2025, an estimated 67,440 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer,
and 51,980 people will die from the disease in the United States. Pancreatic
cancer is one of the deadliest cancers. It is the third leading cause of cancer
death in the United States and has a five-year relative survival rate of only 13%.
2) Symptoms of pancreatic cancer usually first present themselves in its later
stages. If detected at an early stage when surgical removal of a tumor is
possible, the five-year survival rate has potentially reached 50%, but less than
20% of people are diagnosed at this stage. For 52% of pancreatic cancer
patients where the cancer spreads to a distant part of the body, the five-year
survival rate is 3%.
3) The federal government invests significantly less money in pancreatic cancer
research than it does in research of any other leading deadly cancer. In 2022,
the National Cancer Institute (NCI) had a budget of nearly $7,000,000,000. In
2022, only $226,800,000 went towards pancreatic cancer research, which is
only 3.3%. In 2025, Congress provided $7,220,000,000 for the NCI.
4) The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) is a national organization
that serves the pancreatic cancer community from its California headquarters.
The organization is investing $126 million in pancreatic cancer research,

including research grants program and clinical initiatives. PanCAN received
$15 million in funding from Congress in the 2025 fiscal package.
5) The good health and well-being of the residents of California are enhanced as a
direct result of increased awareness about pancreatic cancer and research into
early detection, causes, and effective treatments.
This resolution proclaims November 2025 as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month
in California and urges all Californians to wage hope to end pancreatic cancer.
