ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE ON RULES
Blanca Pacheco, Chair
HR 20 (Ransom) – As Introduced February 26, 2025
SUBJECT: Unclaimed Property Month.
SUMMARY: Recognizes the month of February 2025 as Unclaimed Property Month
throughout the State of California, and encourages Californians to utilize the State Controller’s
Office’s free service to claim their property. Specifically, this resolution makes the following
legislative findings:
1) The State of California has over fourteen billion dollars in unclaimed property, including
uncashed checks, insurance proceeds, and other financial assets that are considered lost or
abandoned when an owner cannot be located after a specified period of time.
2) For over five decades, the Controller has received hundreds of millions of dollars annually
from entities unable to locate the owners, and has made a commitment to returning these
financial assets to their rightful owners.
3) Currently, the Controller holds more than 84 million properties to be returned to 39 million
residents.
4) Last year, the Controller, through the Unclaimed Property Program, returned more than $465
million to rightful owners.
5) To find out if there is unclaimed property listed under one’s name, individuals should visit
the Controller’s Unclaimed Property internet website at www.claimit.ca.gov.
FISCAL EFFECT: This resolution is keyed non-fiscal by Legislative Counsel.
