Existing law requires that print advertisements paid for by a committee, other than a political party committee or a candidate controlled committee, include specified disclosures that state, among other things, the payor of the advertisement and the ad committee's top funders. Existing law, for larger printed advertisements such as yard signs and billboards, requires each line of the disclosure to be in standard Arial Regular type no less than 5 percent of the height of the advertisement.
This bill would instead prohibit the disclosure from exceeding 5 percent of the total copy area of the advertisement for larger printed advertisements.
This bill would allow larger printed advertisements to satisfy the disclosure requirements by including a reference to an internet website where all of the information required to be disclosed is provided.
The Political Reform Act of 1974, an initiative measure, provides that the Legislature may amend the act to further the act's purposes upon a 23 vote of each house of the Legislature and compliance with specified procedural requirements.
This bill would declare that it furthers the purposes of the act.
