SUBJECT: Stomach Cancer Awareness Month

DIGEST: This resolution designates the month of November 2022 as Stomach
Cancer Awareness Month in the State of California.
ANALYSIS: This resolution makes the following legislative findings:
1) Stomach cancer is among the cancers with the lowest five-year survival rate.
2) Forty-two percent of patients diagnosed with stomach cancer die in the first
year.
3) Young patients diagnosed with stomach cancer have a much shorter survival
time compared to the elderly, with an average survival time of about 10.3
months.
4) The five-year relative survival rate for stomach cancer is 32 percent, and
stomach cancer mortality rates have only moderately improved over the past 30
years.
5) Early detection is the key to surviving stomach cancer.
6) Hereditary diffuse gastric cancer, a little-known inherited form of stomach
cancer, carries up to an 80 percent risk that an individual will be diagnosed with
stomach cancer 80 years of age.
7) Lifestyle changes, such as smoking cessation, eating a diet rich in fruits and
vegetables, and maintaining a healthy weight, can potentially reduce the risk of
stomach cancer.

This resolution:
1) Designates the month of November 2022 as Stomach Cancer Awareness Month
in the State of California.
2) Encourages the people of the State of California and interested groups to
observe and support November 2022 as “Stomach Cancer Awareness Month”
through appropriate programs and activities to promote public awareness of,
and potential treatments for, stomach cancer.
Related/Prior Legislation
SR 62 (McGuire, 2016) designated the month of November 2016 as Stomach
Cancer Awareness Month in the State of California. The resolution was adopted by
the Senate.
