The proposed bill would amend current statutes regarding alternative fuel vehicles and their associated license plates. Under current law, a person who owns a motor vehicle that uses alternative fuel is required to apply for an alternative fuel vehicle special plate. The bill changes this requirement, allowing such vehicle owners to apply for a special plate at their discretion instead of mandatorily doing so. Additionally, if they choose not to apply for the special plate, they can still apply for a standard license plate or a special plate along with an alternative fuel vehicle sticker.
The bill also specifies that owners applying for an alternative fuel vehicle special plate must pay an $8 fee, which can also apply to the alternative fuel vehicle sticker. Furthermore, it mandates that all fees collected for the alternative fuel vehicle sticker be deposited into the State Highway Fund. The bill maintains the existing penalties for driving in high occupancy vehicle lanes without the appropriate sticker but updates the penalty amount from $350. Overall, these changes aim to provide more flexibility for alternative fuel vehicle owners while ensuring that fees are directed to the appropriate fund.
