This bill proposes several updates to the current statutes regarding the compensation of state legislators. Notably, it establishes that beginning January 1, 2027, legislators will receive an annual salary equivalent to that of a county supervisor, replacing the previous method of establishing salaries. Additionally, it modifies the language around reimbursement for travel and subsistence expenses, changing "attendance upon" to "attending" and clarifying that these expenses are incurred while acting in a legislative matter with prior approval from the presiding officer.
Furthermore, the bill removes the requirement for the commission to conduct a biennial review of legislative salaries and eliminates the need for voter approval of the commission's recommendations regarding legislative salaries. It also clarifies that the chapter does not apply to state legislators and specifies that the governor's recommendations regarding salaries will take effect unless altered or disapproved by the legislature. Lastly, the act stipulates that it will only become effective if the Arizona Constitution is amended by a vote of the people.
