The proposed bill would update current Arizona statutes on voter registration by introducing new requirements and prohibitions. It would
prohibit Arizona from joining any multistate voter registration organization that necessitates sharing voter registration information, with one specified exception. Additionally, it would
require county recorders to suspend a voter's registration status upon receiving information indicating ineligibility, notify the voter of this suspension, and allow them to address the issue. The bill also mandates that any voter whose registration is canceled due to ineligibility must re-register to vote.
Moreover, the bill would
allow the Secretary of State (SOS) to join a governmental or nongovernmental entity focused on verifying voter registration information, provided that the membership consists solely of state election officials. It would
require the SOS to share confidential information with county recorders for voter registration maintenance and establish a general voter registration list maintenance program that complies with federal laws. Other provisions include
the requirement for nonforwardable mail for voter registration notices and stipulations for tracking and maintaining voter registration activities. Overall, these updates aim to enhance the integrity and maintenance of voter registration lists while imposing new procedural requirements on county recorders and the SOS.
