The proposed bill would update current statutes by expanding the School Safety Program to include
funding for school safety officers (SSOs) and establishing a
new proposal process for purchasing safety equipment and infrastructure improvements. It would require each school district and charter school to
train officers on how to interact with children with disabilities and mandate the development of
emergency response plans for schools receiving program funds. Additionally, the bill would
exempt school building blueprints and floor plans from public record requirements, enhancing the confidentiality of school safety measures.
The bill also modifies existing requirements for program proposals by
applying the same standards for SSOs as currently required for school resource officers (SROs) and juvenile probation officers (JPOs). It introduces new provisions for
training officers on federal privacy laws and mental health issues, mandates the submission of
school safety assessments to local emergency services, and requires
regular safety assessments by the Arizona Department of Education (ADE). Furthermore, it allows for
alternative program proposals focused on safety technology and infrastructure improvements, ensuring that schools can adapt to their specific safety needs while maintaining compliance with the program's requirements.
