The proposed bill would amend current statutes by adding a new section, 15-120.05, to Title 15, Chapter 1, Article 1 of the Arizona Revised Statutes. This new section mandates that starting in the 2026-2027 school year, all schools operated by school districts or charter schools that provide internet-connected devices or internet access must deliver internet safety instruction to students in grades five through twelve. The instruction must cover best practices for protecting students from online predators, avoiding internet scams, safeguarding passwords and personal information, and protecting against opioids, including fentanyl.
Additionally, the bill requires the Arizona Department of Education to compile age-appropriate resources to support the internet safety instruction by June 30, 2026, and make these resources available to schools. It also stipulates that schools must offer parents the option to opt their children out of the internet safety instruction, and schools are not obligated to provide this instruction to students who have been opted out.
