The proposed bill SB1629 introduces new reporting requirements for the Ombudsman-Citizens Aide and the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry (ADCRR). The Ombudsman-Citizens Aide must create an annual report detailing the number of complaints made regarding ADCRR, the topics of these complaints, and their resolutions. This report is to be submitted to various legislative leaders and judiciary committee chairpersons. Similarly, ADCRR is required to submit an annual report that includes statistics on inmate deaths, assaults, segregation or solitary confinement, facility lockdowns, staff details, inmate population, inmate-to-staff ratios, in-person visits, and inmate complaints or grievances.

The bill also includes technical changes and becomes effective on the general effective date. Amendments adopted by the committee mandate that the reports from both ADCRR and the Ombudsman-Citizens Aide also be provided to the Minority Leaders of both legislative chambers. The bill makes minor textual amendments, such as changing "the" to "this" and "one-time" to "onetime," and removes some existing text without altering the substantive requirements of the law.
